2 pts win, 1 pt draw, 0 pts loss — and 2 pts for a bye (with 17 clubs, one team sits out most rounds, and that team is credited the same 2 points as a win so the bye doesn't cost them ground). That's why total points won't always look like a simple win × 2. The team with the most points at the end of the regular season tops the ladder and wins the Minor Premiership (J. J. Giltinan Shield). If two teams are level on points, points difference (points for minus points against) decides position.
How many teams make the play-offs?
The top 8 teams at the end of the regular season qualify for the play-offs. The top four host the bottom four of the eight in the first week of finals.
