Free rugby league: every legitimate free-to-air option
BBC, Channel 9, TVNZ, BBC iPlayer, EMTV — what's free, where, and what you actually get.
You don't have to pay to watch rugby league. Free-to-air rights exist in most major markets — sometimes for a single weekly fixture, sometimes for landmark games like the Grand Final or Wembley Cup Final. Here's the comprehensive list.
United Kingdom: BBC
The BBC carries the Challenge Cup from the quarter-finals onwards, including both semi-finals and the Wembley final, all free on BBC One and BBC iPlayer. The BBC also has comprehensive Rugby League World Cup coverage when the tournament is on (next: France 2026).
What you don't get free in the UK: any Super League regular-season match (Sky Sports has exclusive rights), any NRL match, any State of Origin match.
Australia: Channel 9
Channel 9 broadcasts three NRL matches per week free-to-air: Thursday night, Friday night, and Sunday afternoon. They also show all three State of Origin matches and the NRL Grand Final. That's roughly a third of the regular NRL schedule plus the biggest event games of the year — all free via 9Now streaming.
What's not free in Australia: the other half of the NRL schedule (Saturday matches, second Sunday match), the entire NRLW competition outside the Grand Final, and Super League.
New Zealand: TVNZ
TVNZ carries selected New Zealand Warriors matches free-to-air plus the NRL Grand Final, available via TVNZ+ streaming. It's much less coverage than Channel 9 in Australia — for full NRL access you need Sky Sport NZ.
Papua New Guinea, Fiji, Tonga, Samoa: national broadcasters
The Pacific nations all have free-to-air national broadcasters that carry their international fixtures (Kumuls, Bati, Mate Ma'a, Toa Samoa) plus weekly NRL matches featuring local players. Coverage varies week to week and isn't always consistent, but if you're in the region, the answer is usually free.
France: ViàOccitanie (regional)
ViàOccitanie covers French rugby league fixtures including domestic Elite One competition and selected Catalans Dragons matches. Coverage is regional to southwest France — you won't get this in Paris.
What you can get free, basically
If you live in Australia, free-to-air gets you most of what matters: Origin, the Grand Final, three NRL matches a week. Not bad.
Outside Australia, free-to-air rugby league is patchy. The UK's Challenge Cup coverage is excellent but limited to a single competition. Pacific coverage exists but is hard to access reliably. Everywhere else, paid services are typically the only legal option for comprehensive viewing.
The honest answer about "free" streaming
You'll find blogs and reddit threads pointing to "free" streaming services that aren't licensed. We don't link to them and we don't recommend them. Beyond the legal questions, they're typically loaded with malware and scam ads, the streams are unreliable, and the video quality is terrible. If your goal is reliable rugby league viewing on a budget, the licensed services with free trials are a better path:
- Kayo: 7-day free trial
- Sky Sport Now (NZ): 7-day free trial
- Fubo: 7-day free trial
A free trial of Kayo gets you a full week of NRL during the regular season — that's 8+ matches for free if you time it right.
Free Super League on BBC: get a Freeview aerial
BBC carries 10 live Super League matches per season plus the Challenge Cup Final at Wembley — completely free with a TV licence. If your TV doesn't already pick up Freeview, an indoor aerial is the cheapest fix.
