Rugby league time zones

When NRL, Super League, State of Origin, and the World Cup kick off in your local time, and which league suits your timezone best.

One of the underrated reasons rugby league is hard for international fans is that most matches happen at awkward times for international viewers. The NRL plays in the Australian evening; that's the middle of the night in Europe. Super League plays in the British evening; that's mid-morning in Australia. Here's a practical guide to which competitions suit which timezones, and what kick-off actually feels like where you are.

NRL: Friday night, Saturday afternoon, Sunday afternoon Sydney time

The NRL plays Thursday through Sunday during the regular season. Most matches kick off between 17:30 and 21:50 Sydney time. That works out to:

  • UK / Ireland: 06:30 to 12:50 morning. Friday-Sunday matches mean Saturday morning and Sunday morning viewing. Surprisingly compatible with weekend brunch.
  • France / Germany / Spain: 07:30 to 13:50. Same pattern, slightly later.
  • US East Coast: 02:30 to 08:50 the night before. Most matches are post-midnight, so prime "watch the replay over breakfast" territory.
  • US West Coast: 22:30 (previous day) to 04:50. Better suited — the Friday night Sydney match becomes Friday early evening Pacific Time.
  • NZ: 19:30 to 23:50. Almost identical to Australian local time — ideal.

Bottom line: the NRL is brilliant if you're in Australia, NZ, or the US West Coast. Trickier from Europe, but Saturday and Sunday matches are watchable mid-morning.

Super League: Thursday and Friday evenings, Saturday afternoons, UK time

Super League plays mostly Thursday/Friday evenings (19:00–20:00 UK kick-off) and some Saturday afternoon matches (14:30–17:00). That's:

  • UK: Local prime-time. Perfect.
  • France / Germany: 20:00 to 21:00 prime time. Excellent.
  • Australia East Coast: 04:00 to 06:00 next morning. Awkward — almost everyone watches replays.
  • NZ: 06:00 to 08:00 next morning. Slightly better — can catch live with breakfast.
  • US East Coast: 14:00 to 16:00 same day. Decent afternoon viewing.
  • US West Coast: 11:00 to 13:00 same day. Brilliant Friday-Saturday lunchtime viewing.

Super League is well-suited for European and US viewers. Australian and NZ fans typically watch via the on-demand replay on Super League+.

State of Origin: 20:00 Sydney, midweek

Origin plays Wednesday or Thursday at 20:00 Sydney time. UK time becomes 11:00 mid-morning — not ideal but workable. US becomes 06:00 ET / 03:00 PT — early but doable. NZ stays comfortable at 22:00. Australia of course has prime-time viewing.

Rugby League World Cup: France 2026

The next men's, women's and wheelchair World Cups are scheduled for France in October-November 2026. With matches played at French local times (20:00–21:00 typically), this is the most globally accessible rugby league tournament: ideal for European viewers, decent for Australasian early-morning viewers (06:00 AEDT), and reasonable US afternoon viewing (14:00–15:00 ET).

Which competition fits your timezone best?

Here's a quick lookup based on lifestyle:

  • European weekday-evening watcher: Super League is built for you.
  • European weekend-morning watcher: NRL Saturday and Sunday morning matches are ideal.
  • US West Coast lunchtime watcher: Super League fits perfectly.
  • US East Coast late-night watcher: NRL replays the next morning.
  • Australian prime-time watcher: NRL all the way.
  • NZ prime-time watcher: NRL.
  • NZ early-morning watcher: Super League works for breakfast viewing.

Most streaming services offer on-demand replays immediately after a match ends, so you don't have to be a slave to the live kick-off time — the trade-off is staying off social media to avoid spoilers.
