NOW vs Sky Sports for rugby league: which is better value?

Both services show the same Sky-broadcast Super League matches. NOW costs less per month but lacks the long-term value if you watch a lot. Here's how to choose.

The short answer

If you want to watch Super League for a single month or two — say, the run-in to the play-offs — NOW Sports is the cheaper option with no contract. If you watch all season every season, Sky Sports works out roughly even on price across 12 months and gives you Sky Q's far better recording, multi-room, and 4K features. Cancellable, contract-free flexibility is the only real advantage NOW has.

Use case 1

Pick NOW if…

  • You only watch the play-offs and Grand Final, and want to subscribe for August–October only
  • You're a student or in shared accommodation where installing a Sky dish isn't possible
  • You travel often and need the same service on whatever screen you're near
  • You already have decent broadband elsewhere and don't want a Sky bundle
  • You hate long contracts
Use case 2

Pick Sky Sports if…

  • You watch most weekends and want to record matches you miss
  • You also want Premier League football (NOW does Premier League too, but Sky Q's UI for it is better)
  • You have a household where multiple TVs need coverage at once
  • You can take advantage of Sky's broadband + TV bundle pricing
  • You watch sport in 4K HDR — only available on Sky Q
Don't forget

Free coverage you get either way

Whichever you pick, you also get free rugby league through the BBC's package: 10 live Super League matches per season on BBC iPlayer, plus the Challenge Cup Final at Wembley. The BBC's coverage runs without a subscription — all you need is a UK TV licence. So your Sky/NOW choice only affects matches the BBC isn't carrying.

There's also Super League+ for £5.99/mo, which carries every match Sky shows plus Championship and League 1 fixtures Sky doesn't. If you're a die-hard who wants every match, Super League+ alone or alongside one of these is often the better buy.

Verdict

What we recommend

For most UK fans: NOW Sports. Unless you watch a lot of other sport on Sky already, the contract-free flexibility outweighs the modest annual saving Sky offers when bundled. You can dip in and out around the play-offs and Grand Final without committing to a 24-month deal.

If you watch Premier League football too: Sky Sports with a broadband bundle is the better long-term buy. The bundle pricing is hard to beat once you factor in everything you'd pay for separately.

If you want every Super League match including lower divisions: Add Super League+ at £5.99/mo to either, and you'll have wall-to-wall coverage.

FAQ

Common questions

Does NOW Sports have all the same Sky matches?
Yes. NOW Sports is owned by Sky Group and carries the same Sky Sports channels, including all Super League coverage. Anything Sky Sports broadcasts will also be on NOW.
Can I record on NOW Sports?
Not on the main NOW subscription. The optional "Boost" tier (£6/month extra) adds restart and pause for live programmes but it's still not full DVR — you can't store recordings to watch much later. Sky Q is the better choice if recording matters to you.
Which has better picture quality?
Sky Q delivers HD by default and 4K on supported events. NOW Sports streams in SD by default — you'll need the Boost add-on (£6/month) for HD, and there's no 4K. For most rugby league viewing the difference isn't huge, but for the Grand Final and Challenge Cup Final you'll notice it.
Can I switch between them?
Yes. NOW is contract-free, so you can cancel any time. Sky Sports needs you to honour your contract length (typically 18 or 24 months). If you're considering the switch, calculate your remaining contract cost first — Sky's early termination fees can be expensive.
What about Sky Stream and Sky Glass?
Both are alternative ways to get Sky Sports without a satellite dish. Sky Stream uses a streaming puck (like a Roku); Sky Glass is a TV with Sky built in. Pricing is similar to standalone Sky Sports. They're worth considering if you can't install a dish but still want the full Sky experience over NOW.
